Karhu, the sneaker brand from Finland

Karhu was founded in 1916 as a Finnish brand known at the time as Ab Sport Artiklar. Specialising in the manufacture of shoes for men and women, it was not until 1920 that the name Karhu (meaning "Bear" in Finnish) and the bear logo were used.

At that time, the brand manufactured discs and javelins for professional athletes. In 1920, the brand was even the official equipment of the "Flying Finns" at the Summer Olympics.

The first athlete to wear Karhu shoes was Paavo Nurmi from Finland. He won a total of nine gold medals at the Olympic Games between 1920 and 1928. The Finnish brand dominated the 1952 Helsinki Olympics with 15 gold medals.

Karhu's international reputation for technical expertise has made the company the world's leading manufacturer of sports shoes.

Subsequently, Karhu officially registered its famous M symbol, derived from the word "Mestari", which means "champion" in Finnish.
