Steve Perryman, having left the club just before the 1990-91 season, saw his assistant Phil Holder take the reins of the team and deliver a very promising season. The team was built around the defensive rock that was Keith Millen, with Keith Jones providing great stability in midfield. The highly promising attack of Dean Holdsworth and Gary Blissett came together and allowed Brentford to qualify for the third division play-offs. The club narrowly lost to Tranmere, putting promotion out of reach.
