The Red Wing 877 was marketed by Red Wing Shoes starting in the autumn of 1952. The 8-inch Red Wing 877 was designed as a hunting boot. The Red Wing 877 quickly became known as the "Irish Setter" due to its similar colour to that of the breed, which is meant to assist any hunter during their outing. In 2013, Red Wing launched a new leather for the 877: Oro-Legacy leather in homage to the history of the 877 and 875 boots based on designs from the Red Wing archives. Oro-Legacy leather is based on the leather from the legendary Red Wing Irish Setter boots of the 1970s. Because no pigment is added during the finishing process of the Red Wing leather, the natural character of the leather is highlighted.
